Good Companionship - Imam bn Baz

Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz (rahimahullaah) said:

“Keeping company with good people is one of the best of deeds that bring one closer to Allaah, and is one of the best means of attaining blessing. On the other hand, keeping company with bad people such as disbelievers and those who commit sin openly is not permissible, and is one of the things that lead to a bad end and cause one to adopt their attitudes and deeds.

What the believer must do is try hard to keep company with good people and avoid keeping company with bad people. It is not permissible to obey parents or others with regard to keeping company with bad people or forsaking good people, because the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said:“Obedience is only with regard to that which is right and proper.” And he (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “There is no obedience to any created being if it involves disobedience to the Creator.”

How can one protect himself from sins and disobedience
Answered by Shaykh Abdul-Aziz bin Abdillah bin Baaz may Allah have mercy on him
Question: How can a person protect his heart from sinning and disobedience?
Answer: Ask his Lord for success and strive. Allah said,
“And whoever strives only strives for [the benefit of] himself.” [Surah al-'Ankabut: 6]
“And those who strive for Us – We will surely guide them to Our ways.” [Surah al-'Ankabut: 69]
So it is upon a person to strive against his own soul for the sake of Allah, and to safeguard himself from what Allah made impermissible. To ask his Lord for success, aid, and be abundant in mentioning/remembering Allah. To distance himself far away from evil sittings. These are the causes for safety.
The essence of (staying away from sins and disobedience) is to have fear of Allah, continuance observance of Him, and to remember that disobedience is a cause of gaining Allah’s anger and punishment. Strive in asking and begging Allah to protect you from what He prohibited. Be abundant in reciting the Qur’an, pondering over the meanings, be diligent in having the best company and sit with them, and remain far away from evil companionship. These are the causes for peace and security.
