Ramadan, Taraweeh, Women, Masjid, Laylatul Qadr - Albani رحمه الله

New post on Precious Gems from the works of Shaikh Al-Albaani

It is recommended for women to pray taraaweeh in the mosque

by Amaturrahmaan
Q: "Is it best for a woman to perform the night prayer in Ramadhaan (taraaweeh) in her house or at the mosque?"
Shaikh al-Albaani: "Particularly for the night prayer in Ramadhaan, the best thing is what the righteous believing women of the Righteous Predecessors (Salaf as-Saalih) used to do, which is performing it with the congregation of Muslims in the mosques, as opposed to the rest of the months in which case 'Their houses are better for them' as the Prophet ﷺ said."
Q: "So it is recommended (mustahabb) for a woman, as you said, to go out to pray taraaweeh?"
Shaikh al-Albaani: "Didn't you get the answer to this question already?
Q: "Yes but just to confirm."
Shaikh al-Albaani: "Yes it is as you said. And it is even more recommended for the 27th night."

Practical Way To Benefit From Ramadhaan – Mustafa George (hafidhahullaah)

– Then comes time for taraweeh. If the family is accustomed to praying taraweeh at home, then they take the initiative to go and pray in the masjid. And its important to the take the whole family to the masjid so everyone realizes that this is the month of Ramadhaan where we have to do extra worship to get closer to Allah and one of those extra acts of worship is praying Taraweeh.
It is important to note here that many Muslims don’t understand that worship falls into different categories. For example, there are those acts of worship which are obligatory, such as praying 5 times a day and then those which are recommended (i.e. Sunnah in the fiqh sense of the word) such as Taraweeh.
Its particularly sad to see that many of the Muslims neglect the obligatory duties such as praying in congregation for the men but they feel like they have fallen short if they don’t pray taraweeh in the month of Ramadhaan. Even though its good to see that the Muslims have zeal in the month of Ramadhaan to pray taraweeh, we need to understand that praying in congregation for the men inside and outside the month of Ramadhaan is more important and has a greater reward than praying Taraweeh. And Allah Knows Best.

Shaykh Saalih al-Fowzaan: No doubt the prayer of the woman in her home is better, whilst it is also permissible for her to go to the masjid for the prayer with the Muslims (in congregation) with the condition that she is protected from any fitnah and that she is covered (by hijaab) and is separate from the men. So in both situations there is reward for her from Allaah (Subhaanahu wa Ta’aala), even though the first situation (praying in her home) is better.

[Shaykh Saailh ibn Fowzaan|ad-Da’wah – 1481, Ramadhaan 1415AH|ad-Durar an-Naadhirah fil-Fataawa al-Mu’aasirah – Page 235]

The scholars of the Standing Committee:
A woman's praying in her house is better for her than her praying in the mosque, whether it is an obligatory or supererogatory prayer, Taraweeh or otherwise.

Fataawa al-Lajnah ad Daa'imah – vol. 1   (7/201)

Shaykh ibn 'Uthaymeen:

It is better for a woman to pray in her house, even if there is a mosque in which Taraweeh prayers are held, and if she prays in her house, there is ,nothing wrong with her leading other women in the house in prayer. In this case, if she has only memorised a little of the Qur'an, she may read from the Mushaf.

Shaykh ibn 'Uthaymeen Fataawa Noor 'ala al-Darb

Shaykh Ibn Baaz (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked:
What is the Islamic ruling on a woman praying Taraweeh in the mosque?
He replied:
The basic principle with regard to a woman’s prayer is that her home is preferable and better for her, but if she thinks that there is an interest to be served by praying in the mosque, so long as she covers herself properly, because that is more motivating for her, or because she can benefit from listening to lessons, then there is nothing wrong with that, praise be to Allah. It is also good because of what it involves of great benefits and encouraging people to do righteous deeds.
End quote from the Shaykh’s website:
He was also asked:
Is it permissible for a woman to pray Taraweeh in the mosque with the men?
He (may Allah have mercy on him) replied:
Yes, it is mustahabb for her to do that if she fears that she will be lazy at home, otherwise her house is better. But if there is a need for that, there is nothing wrong with it. The women used to offer the five daily prayers with the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), although he said:
“Their houses are better for them.”
But some women may feel lazy or unmotivated at home. So if she goes out to the mosque, fully covered and observing hijab, and avoiding any wanton display, with the aim of praying and listening to people of knowledge, then she will be rewarded for that, because this is a righteous aim.
[Fataawa Noor ‘ala ad-Darb (9/489)]
Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen said:
It is better for her to pray Taraweeh at home, but if praying in the mosque is more motivating for her and helps her to focus better, and if she prays at home she fears that she may neglect her prayer, then in this case the mosque may be better.

In his book Hiraasat al-Fadeelah (p. 86), Shaykh Bakr Abu Zayd listed the conditions for women to go out to the mosque.
He said:
Women are allowed to go out to the mosque according to the following rulings:
1- That there is no risk of them tempting others or being tempted;
2- That their attendance will not lead to anything that is forbidden according to sharee’ah;
3- That they do not jostle with men in the street or in the mosque;
4- That they should go out not wearing perfume;
5- That they should go out wearing hijab, not making a wanton display of their adornment;
6- A door should be set aside in the mosque just for women to enter and exit, as mentioned in the hadeeth narrated in Sunan Abi Dawood and elsewhere;
7- The women’s rows should be behind the men;
8- The best rows for women are those at the back, unlike the case for men;
9- If the imaam makes any mistake in his prayer, men should say “Subhan Allaah!” and women should clap;
10- The women should leave the mosque before the men, and the men should wait until the women have dispersed to their homes, as mentioned in the hadeeth of Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) in Saheeh al-Bukhaari and elsewhere.

  1. IS IT BETTER FOR SISTERS TO PRAY TARAWEEH AT HOME OR IN THE MASJID WITH THE BROTHERS? ANSWER PLUS IMPORTANT GUIDELINES
    Shaykh Muhammad ibn Saalih Al-‘Uthaymeen
    Question: Many of the women pray Taraaweeh along with the men in the Masjid. Is this better for her or is it better within the home? Specifically since many of them say that this is from that which assists her and encourages her (upon worship) particularly if she is not able to read from the Mus’haf.
    Answer: Her prayer in her home is better. However, if her praying in the Masjid helps her to be more active and it is more encouraging for her, and she fears that if she prays within her home then she may miss out (on some of the reward or Khushoo’) of her prayer, then perhaps praying in the Masjid in this case would be better. This is because this virtue is connected to the act of worship itself, while the home is connected to the place of the act of worship. The virtue which is connected to the act of worship takes precedence in being given attention more so than that which is connected to the place (i.e., where it is done).
    However, it is obligatory upon the woman when she goes out that she does so covered and not improperly dressed nor (should she be) perfumed. Based upon this, the women who bring incense to the side wherein the women pray, then in this case she is closer to sin than she is to reward. This is because the women become scented by way of this incense and then the woman leaves (the Masjid) perfumed. The Prophet (sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam) said:
    أيما امرأة أصابت بخوراً فلا تشهد معنا العشاء
    Whichever woman has encountered incense then she is not to pray ‘Ishaa with us.
    Na’am, if the woman were to bring incense and when she reached the Masjid she puts the incense such that neither she nor whoever is in the place takes it (i.e., is affected by it) and onlythe place is scented, then there is no harm in this; however, leaving this is better, so that she will not be followed (in doing this) by one who does not do this action (which she has done).
