The word Ramadan (رمضان)
Originally posted on Pearls of a Muslim:The word Ramadan (رمضان) comes from the word Ramad (رمض) which literally means “burning.”
Imām Qurtubī said:
إنما سمي رمضان لأنه يرمض الذنوب أي يحرقها با لأعمال الصالحة
“It was named Ramadan because it burns the sins of people with good deeds.”
