Its upon us to learn the USOOL (fundamentals) so that we understand the Basic Essential foundations & walk upon clarity.
من حرم الأصول حرم الوصول
Every now & then you come across an anniversary, festival or celebration ....So lets know that we (muslims) have only 2 Eids (festivals) - 'Eed ul Fitr & 'Eedhul Adh-haa.
Fridays also is considered a smaller Eid for us though.
Now,
Once we've got this basic principle, its sufficient for us to know that we dont partake in any other festivals esp. those unlegislated in our shari'ah. We dont celebrate birthdays, new years, anniversaries, father's day, mother's day, teacher's day, children's day, valentines' day, etc etc etc.
First of all we follow the Islamic (hijri) calendar & not the christian calendar !
Then how can we calculate the New Year based on this wrong 'asl ?!
Even our Prophet's birthday - we dont celebrate, rather we remember & venerate our prophet صلى الله عليه و سلم in the legislated manner without exceeding the limits all round the year. (Not just on a particular day in a year!)

Shaykh al-Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah [May Allaah have Mercy on him]:
‘Alee bin Abee Taalib (May Allaah be Pleased with him) even forbade
the Muslims from using the same names (i.e. that it is not permissible
to use names like Christmas/Eve, Boxing Day, New Years' Day/Eve,
Mother’s Day, April Fool’s Day etc.) that the Kuffaar do for their
religious festivals (and special occasions), so how about those who
participate on these days as they do?

Shaykh Saalih Al-Fawzaan hafidhahullah:
If we are not allowed to celebrate the Islamic new year then how can we justify celebrating the pagan new year?
In one of his Friday sermons, Shaykh Saalih al-Fowzaan -may Allaah preserve him- gave a more detailed warning about the matter, saying:

التهنئة برأس العام الجديد ليست معروفة عند السلف، ولهذا تركها أولى، لكن لو أن الإنسان بناءً على أنه في العام الذي مضى أفناه في طاعة الله -عز وجل- فيهنئه لطول عمره في طاعة الله فهذا لا بأس به، لأن خير الناس من طال عمره وحسن عمله.
لكن هذه التهنئة إنما تكون على رأس العام الهجري.
أما رأس العام الميلادي فإنه لا يجوز التهنئة به؛ لأنه ليس عاما شرعياً، بل إن هنئ به الكفار على أعيادهم فهذا يكون الإنسان فيه على خطر عظيم أن يهنئهم بأعياد الكفر، لأن التهنئة بأعياد الكفر رضا بها وزيادة، والرضا بالأعياد الكفرية ربما يخرج الإنسان من دائرة الإسلام، كما ذكر ذلك ابن القيم -رحمه الله- في كتابه "أحكام أهل الذمة".
وخلاصة القول:
أن التهنئة برأس العام الهجري تركها أولى بلا شك؛ لأنها ليست من عهد السلف، وإن فعلها الإنسان فلا يؤثم، وأما التهنئة برأس العام الميلادي فلا.

عباد الله من البدع التي حدثت في هذا الزمان في هذا الوقت بالذات، ما ينشر في بعض الجولات، أو في الانترنت، أو يتناقله الناس في هذه الأيام التي هي آخر السنة الهجرية بداية السنة المقبلة، يوصون بعبادات ما أنزل الله بها من سلطان، يوصون الصيام في آخر العام، يوصون بالتوبة، يوصون بأشياء هذا ما أنزل الله به من سلطان لا يخص، لا تخص هذه الأيام بشيء لأنه لم يرد فيها دليل من الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم، وكل محدثة بدعة، وكل بدعة ضلالة، فاحذروا من هذه الترويجات وهذه الشائعات وحذروا منها، فإنها شر وتجر إلى شرور، وإلى بدع أخرى، فلا يتساهل في أمر البدع…
Servants of Allaah! Among the innovations that have occurred in this day and age specifically is what is spread through cellphone messages or on the internet, and passed on by people [personally] among themselves as well, in these days at the end of the Hijri year and the beginning of the new one. They encourage certain acts of worship for which Allaah sent down no authority. They encourage fasting at the end of the year, as well as repentance and other matters which Allaah sent down no authority for. These days are not to be observed as anything special, as no evidence for this has come from the Messenger (may Allaah raise his rank and grant him peace). Every newly invented matter [in the Religion] is a bid’ah (innovation), and every innovation is misguidance. So be warned of these matters being promoted and spread, and warn [others] of them, as they are evil and drag [people] into other evil things and innovations. Lenience is not appropriate as it relates to matters of innovation… [3]
