The Shari`ah prefers and encourages earning and working - ابن باز

It is also of the merits of Shari`ah that it makes people free to earn their livelihood, in giving and taking, so a Muslim can freely earn, take, and give within the limits of Shari`ah. Allah (Exalted be He) says, He gets reward for that (good) which he has earned, and he is punished for that (evil) which he has earned. i.e. a Muslim will be rewarded for his good gains and will be punished for his evil gains. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said in an authentic Hadith, "It is better for anyone of you to take a rope (and cut) and bring a bundle of wood (from the forest) over his back and sell it and Allah will save his face (from the Hell-Fire) because of that, rather than to ask the people who may give him or not." So the Prophet (peace be upon him) exhorted people to earn their living and clarified that it is much better than asking people (for charity).

When the Prophet (peace be upon him) was asked about the best type of earning,

(Part No. 2; Page No. 244)

he said, "The work of a man's own hand, and every legitimate sale." He (Peace be upon him) also said, Nobody has ever eaten a better meal than that which he has earned by working with his own hands. The Prophet of Allah, David, used to eat from the earnings of his manual labor .

The Shari`ah prefers and encourages earning and working. It indicates that the one who works with his own hands is worthy of his earnings and it prohibits a Muslim from offending his brother, his wealth and his honor unless he has the right to do so. All these matters are from the merits of this great Law that protects people's wealth and honor. It protects their people and blood and commands them to earn their own living and encouraged them to. The noble Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Cherish that which gives you benefit (in the Hereafter) and seek help from Allah and do not lose heart, and if anything (in the form of trouble) comes to you, do not say: If I had not done that, it would not have happened so and so, but say: Allah did that what He had ordained to do and your " if" opens the (gate) for the Satan." This Hadith is reported by Muslim in his Sahih. If I were to mention everything about the greatness of the Shari`ah, its merits and care for the interests of Muslims during their life and after their death, it would take a very long time. This is just a small indication that is sufficient for a rational person to acknowledge the greatness of this Shari`ah and its care for the Muslims' circumstances and interests in the present and in the future.

A man's role is to earn livelihood and support his family financially while a woman's role is to raise and lovechildren and show compassion toward them. This is in addition to nursing, breastfeeding, teaching children, administrating female schools, treating women medically, as well as other duties proper for women. Abandoning the domestic duties destroys the whole family and, eventually, the society becomes an empty entity, a form without reality or substance.

Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) says: Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, because Allâh has made one of them to excel the other, and because they spend (to support them) from their means. It is Allah's Law upon His creation that guardianship is the duty of man

(Part No. 1; Page No. 420)

who supports the woman financially as mentioned in the previous Ayah. Allah has ordered women to stay in their houses and forbidden them from free intermixing with Ajanib (men other than a husband or permanently unmarriageable male relatives) in the same place, such as in work, markets, trips, and traveling. Women's engagement in men's work will lead to committing what Allah has prohibited and disobeying Allah's Orders and neglecting the legal duties a Muslim woman has to perform.

Lawful earnings and supporting dependents: if it becomes necessary for a student to work while studying, he must ensure that he does so through permissible means in order to support himself and his dependents until Allaah provides for him. Ka‘b ibn ‘Ujrah said, “A man passed by the Messenger of Allaah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wassallam) and the Companions saw that he appeared strong and energetic so they said, “Messenger of Allaah! If only he was in the path of Allaah!” At that, the Messenger of Allaah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wassallam) replied,
“If he set out to work in order to support his young children, he is in the path of Allaah. If he set out to work in order to support his two elderly parents, he is in the path of Allaah. If he set out to work in order to remain away from the unlawful and away from asking of others, he is in the path of Allaah. If he set out with the objective of ostentation and boasting, he is in the path of shaytaan.”[13]
One’s accountability and responsibility before his Lord. The Messenger of Allaah (Sallallaahu Alayhi Wassallam) said,
“The two feet of the son of Aadam will not move on the Day of Judgement as he stands before his Lord until he is asked about five: his life and how he spent it; his youth and how he used it up; his property – where he acquired it, and where he spent it; and what he did with the knowledge he had.”[14]
