In times like these where WhatsApp has become such an important medium of communication, what were to happen if it were to suddenly stop working?
The company officially made the announcement sometime last year wherein it stated that while these mobile devices have an important part to play in their story, they don’t offer the kind of capabilities they require in order to expand their app’s features in the future.
According to their official blogpost,
WhatsApp will no longer have support for a few Symbian, BBOS, Windows,
Android and iOS operating system versions. While initially, they were to
end support for devices by the end of 2016 — the company later extended
the date till June, 2017. Here are the devices that will no longer be
supported.
‘So, by the end of 2016, we will be ending support for WhatsApp Messenger on the following mobile platforms:
BlackBerry, including BlackBerry 10
Nokia S40
Nokia Symbian S60
Android 2.1 and Android 2.2
Windows Phone 7.1
iPhone 3GS/iOS 6
While these mobile devices have been an important part of our story, they don't offer the kind of capabilities we need to expand our app's features in the future. If you use one of these affected mobile devices, we recommend upgrading to a newer Android, iPhone, or Windows Phone before the end of 2016 to continue using WhatsApp.’

Furthermore, people who allow auto-updates from only major software providers on their laptops often allow app auto-updates from even unknown, overseas providers on their mobile devices; if a provider is compromised, malware disguised as a feature within a new release can potentially propagate to many users. Also, from a practical standpoint, desktop and laptop cameras are far less likely to be in positions to accidentally capture sensitive activities than smartphone cameras, and often have lights that illuminate whenever the camera is active – so anyone in sight knows that they are being recorded.
So, practically speaking, what should you do to prevent a major problem?
Clearly, it is best to run, but not to rely on, mobile security software. But, on top of that, I suggest adding an astoundingly low-tech security countermeasure: Keep the phone out of sensitive areas, and if you must bring it in, block the camera’s view when it is not in use.

Recently I was asked to update my whatsapp.
I,
like many people, normally just hit update and click OK without
reading anything that pops up and asks for agreement. This time I
decided to read what I was actually agreeing to and I was amazed at the
level of access I was giving whatsapp.
I was very concerned about almost all the permission requests.
I
was especially shocked when I realised that I was EXPLICITLY agreeing
to give unlimited access to my camera and microphone. If I agreed to
this they would be able to use my camera and microphone without asking
and without me even knowing.
Some people say "I've got nothing to
hide" but that doesn't mean you should agree to random people knowing
and SEEING your personal business? Being able to view you and your
family at all times? Listen to all your conversations?
So potentially a whatsapp employee can
see women whilst they are totally uncovered!! Perhaps even when a
husband and wife spend personal time together!
Quote
"This permission allows the app to record audio AT ANY TIME WITHOUT YOUR CONFIRMATION"

"This permission allows the app to use the camera AT ANY TIME WITHOUT YOUR CONFIRMATION"

"Allows the app to recieve and process SMS messages. This means the app could monitor or delete messages sent to your device without showing them to you"
(See attachments)
You
need to ask yourself why so many of these apps are 'FREE'. Why is
whatsapp a free service? Theres no advertising, so how do they make any
money? why is it worth $19 billion?
The popular game 'Angry Birds' made the news recently for a similar reason.

There are EVEN Quran apps asking for permission to access peronal details! SubhanAllah
Why
does a Quran app need to know your exact location and phone call
status? Thats what the app "Al-Quran (FREE) " by ISYSWAY Ltd. asks
for!
So I'd like to advise you to be very careful when downloading apps...
