Abul Hasan Al-Ash-ari announced his repentance on the Mimbar ربيع السنة

Shaikh Rabee Bin Haadi (hafidha-hullaah) was asked:
A lot of mistakes and differing occurs amongst the Salafi youth as a result of the return or claimed return of an opposer of the Salafi Manhaj to the domain of Salafiyyah; What is your advice to the youth, (as) some of them accept the repentance of (such a person) and others do not.

Answer:
Whatever the case may be, if a person falls into Sin, doubts and Bidah, and then repents and turns in repentance and obedience to Allaah, it is not permissible for anyone to close the door of repentance in his face; because the door of repentance is open up until the sun rises from The West.  If a person repents and returns, it is obligatory to praise and encourage him.
However, some people are well known for lying and changing colour (i.e. inconsistent), so he acts as if he is repentant.  With regards to this person, we say: Inshaa-Allaah your repentance is accepted, but we are cautious of him until he manifests his correct repentance.
Abul Hasan Al-Ash-ari announced his repentance on the Mimbar.  He used to be an extreme Mutazili–a leader amongst the leaders of the Mutazilah and he persisted in defence of this evil school of thought for forty years and repented after that.  He announced his repentance, and from the proofs of his repentance is that he began to author books of astounding refutations against the Mutizalah–refutation against their doubts.   So there are signs of truthful acts of repentance which dispels doubts (about his repentance); Meaning: He publicised and manifested with regards to what he displayed to the people that he follows the truth.
So there are affairs that show the truthfulness of (the repentant one) and there are factual evidences that show the untruthfulness of (the one who merely claims to have repented).  He (the person) is encouraged if there are factual evidences showing his truthfulness, and (on the other hand) it is incumbent upon the Salafiyyoon to be cautious of him if there are factual evidences showing only the mere claims of his (repentance), as it can be that he is being deceitful; because right now is an era of Siyaasah, Nifaaq and Taqiyyah.
The groups are widespread; It is not possible to ruin the Salafi youth and hinder the Salafi youth from the Salafi Methodology, except with either claims of (ascription) to Salafiyyah or (claims) of withdrawal from mistakes that are in opposition to the Salafi Manhaj.  So if they incline towards him (i.e. the one who claims repentance), he can be capable of enticing the one he can entice amongst them towards a corrupt Methodology.  This does take place.

Whatever the case may be, encouragement is given to the one from whom repentance is manifested and it is obligatory to be cautious of the one from whom playing games is manifested.  The Salafiyyoon should be alert with regards to the likes of these (people).

Shaykh Al-Fawzaan said, "Whoever repents, and then Allah will turn to him in repentance. If he used to call to falsehood and has repented, and now calls to the truth, then Allah will forgive him.
However, he must announce his repentance to the people and if he has books or tapes which call to falsehood, he needs to denounce them.
He must denounce these books and tapes. He should state his repentance openly, so that nobody can dispute with him of what has come to pass from him.
So, if he proclaims and clarifies [his repentance], then he may have absolved himself.
However, if he were to be silent, then the people would dispute against him with what had come to pass, and they would not know or believe that he has repented." Ref: Dusunnah.com

Shaykh Ubayd Al-Jaabiree said, "Repenting from innovation is just like repenting from disobedience.
However, here I must mention that if the disobedience, whether it be innovation or other than it, is open then it is obligatory that he repent to Allaah openly and clarify that he was in error; if he called to this innovation, incited towards it, and enticed (the people) with it.
As I mentioned, the conditions for repentance from innovation are just as the conditions for repentance from disobedience. It is a must that there be (two matters):
Rectification of one’s condition.
Bayaan (clarification, making apparent); clarification of the truth which he had concealed or distorted." Ref: ar.miraath.net

In Local Newspapers of SAUDI & KUWAIT

Upon  (the student of knowledge) who repents is to PUBLISH his tawba, & rectify (reconcile)...
Because he may repent but the people may not know it (tht he repented)....

- Imam Ibn Baz رحمه الله

I also advise them to expiate for what they have done, whether in writing or any other way, to clear themselves from such deeds and remove the effect of what they said earlier. They should also perform useful deeds that bring them closer to Allah and benefit the people; and beware of hastening to judge people as Kafirs, Fasiqs (people flagrantly violating Islamic law) or Mubtadi`s (those who introduce innovations in the religion) without evidence. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, When a person calls his brother (in Islam) a Kafir, one of them will certainly deserve the title. (Agreed upon by Imams Al-Bukhari and Muslim).

It is prescribed for Al-Haqq seekers and learners to refer to the eminent scholars if they face something ambiguous in their words, so that they will clarify the matter to them and remove the doubts they have, according to Allah's saying in Surah Al-Nisa', When there comes to them some matter touching (public) safety or fear, they make it known (among the people); if only they had referred it to the Messenger or to those charged with authority among them, the proper investigators would have understood it from them (directly). Had it not been for the Grace and Mercy of Allâh upon you, you would have followed Shaitân (Satan), save a few of you.
