Shaikh Abdus Salaam Burgess (rahimahullaah) said: As for Ahlus Sunnah, indeed this term is applied to a person who adheres to the creed of Ahlus Sunnah Wal-Jamaa-ah as stated in their well-known books and he does not leave the equivalent of a fingertip from it. The Sunnah that Ahlus Sunnah Wal-Jamaa-ah ascribes to is the path of the Prophet (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) and that of the noble companions, just as when Imaam Maalik (rahimahullaah) was asked about the Sunnah, he said: ‘’It is what does not (contain) other than what the Sunnah is’’ and then he recited the Ayah: وَأَنَّ هَٰذَا صِرَاطِي مُسْتَقِيمًا فَاتَّبِعُوهُ ۖ وَلَا تَتَّبِعُوا السُّبُلَ فَتَفَرَّقَ بِكُمْ عَن سَبِيلِهِ ۚ ذَٰلِكُمْ وَصَّاكُم بِهِ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ ”And verily, this is my Straight Path, so follow it, and follow not (other) paths, for they will separate you away from His Path.” [Soorah Al-An’aam: Ayah: 153] The one who traverses on this straight path and his heart is not inclined towards anything of the major or minor ahwaa (i.e. the innovations); but he follows (that straight path)-following […]
